Common Toilet Problems and Solutions
As a top toilet repair company in Los Angeles, we’ve seen it all at Reckon & Reckon Plumbing. Some of the most common toilet problems we see include slow filling, non-flushing, leaking, water trickling into the bowl, and water trickling into the tank.
Slow Filling
A slow filling toilet can be an incredibly frustrating occurrence. Causes of a slow filling toilet vary but can include issues with debris or the age of the valve.
Over time, debris can build up in your water system. This build-up can reside within the supply line, the body of the valve, or at the wall, and slows down the filling speed of the valve. The solution, in this case, is flushing the debris out of the system. If this is ineffective, then replacing or repairing the valve is the preferred toilet fix.
In the case of older valves, working parts can begin to show wear and tear that can slow the tank’s filling. If you’re able to identify the specific part of the valve that’s malfunctioning, it may be possible to replace that part, whether it be the fill valve itself, a replacement seal, or a top-cap assembly. Often it makes just as much sense to replace the entire valve if the other components are also showing signs of wear and tear.
Non-Flushing
A non-flushing toilet can be just as challenging to manage as one that won’t fill. The most common cause of a non-flushing toilet is a problem with the flapper, a component in the tank that allows the water to flow into the bowl from the tank, and then closes when the water in the bowl reaches the desired level.
A poorly seated flapper is the issue with most toilets that require you to “jiggling the handle” to flush. If the problem is more severe than that, it could be that the chain between the flapper and the interior lever attached to the handle has broken or come loose.
Running Toilet
A running toilet is usually caused by either a problem with the flapper, like a non-flushing toilet or an issue with the valve, like a slow-filling toilet. A need for toilet leaking repair can also result but is, of course, much more noticeable in and of itself, since you’d see the leaking water!
Weak Flush
Weak flushing is almost always related to an issue with the toilet bowl filling to its optimal level. This type of toilet flushing repair could require examining the refill valve, the flapper valve, or the float. Sometimes a weak flush is the result of a DIY homeowner repair that used less than optimal parts to replace malfunctioning ones.
Clogged and Overflowing Toilets
Overflowing toilets generally happen for one of the following reasons: the flapper valve isn’t sealing, the ball float could be malfunctioning, or the toilet has been flushed too many times while clogged. The most important thing for the homeowner to do in this case is to shut the water off at the wall to prevent water from the mainline from continuing to fill the toilet, and call a plumber!
New Toilet Installation
If your toilet is aging, the need for repairs will likely become more and more common. While having a new toilet installed may seem like a disruption to your everyday life, a professional plumber can make the process a smooth one—and it will be far less disruptive than a constantly malfunctioning older toilet, not to mention easier on your utility bill!
There are other advantages as well, such as the rebate program offered by Los Angeles for upgrading to ultra-low-flush toilets, as well as the chance to update your bathroom with a newer, more modern style.
Here at Reckon & Reckon, we attend to every detail, from helping you choose the right toilet to ensure that installation goes quickly and smoothly. We make sure that your toilet is in perfect working order before we leave, and that there’s no damage to your new toilet or bathroom flooring.
Why Hire a Plumber
While doing your own plumbing repairs may have some advantages, we always recommend enlisting the help of a professional plumber. Yes, you may save on your bottom line by handling a repair yourself, but that’s only if the repair goes well the first time. Often, that’s not the case, and you have to purchase further tools and materials—or even cause more damage in the process. A professional can quickly and accurately diagnose the issue and fix it—fast. Even if it’s a simple toilet unclogging, it’s best to hire a professional.
